Autism Studies Master Programs

Overview

The autism studies master’s program focuses on preparing students to work with and teach children or adults with autism. In some states, teachers must have a bachelor’s degree or higher as well as an Education Specialist Instruction Credential program approved by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing. Most new aspiring special education teachers also must pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment and demonstrate subject matter competency.

Degree Description

The autism studies master’s program offers students individualized instruction in identifying students with autism, developing individual education plans, teaching and supervising autistic students, counseling, and applicable laws and policies. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the tools, strategies, concepts, and assessments that are necessary in dealing with the special needs of students with autism. Courses assist current and prospective teachers with improving their professional performance as educators, assessors, researchers, and behavior specialists while working with students with autism.

General Requirements

There are multiple requirements for current and prospective special education teachers. These requirements vary from state to state. Most individuals who become special education teachers earn an undergraduate degree, complete an approved training program in special education, and then become certified. All teachers, whether leading a special education classroom or a general education classroom, must be certified in every state in the United States.
